Thanks for your help!

Welcome to the final round of the Nova Ultimate All-in-One WordPress Theme thumbnail selection. The Theme Nova and iDreamDigital teams studied the responses to the first round carefully and have taken all opinions to heart. To that end, we’ve come up with this final round of thumbnails for your consideration.

This time, we’d like you to consider which thumbnails most appeal to you aesthetically. These thumbnails are displayed on pages containing many other thumbnails (example below) and so we want to capture not only your imagination, but your attention. Please pick your two favorite thumbnails then tell us why you picked, or did not pick, the ones that you did.

Round One: Help Theme Nova pick a Thumbnail for the Nova One Ultimate All-in-One WordPress Theme
Launched: A New Website and Logo for the Public Construction Council of BC
  • http://www.findingtheuniverse.com Laurence

The question needs to read which “one”, not which “two” :)

  • http://twitter.com/TMStreetAnalyst Main Street Analyst

Number 1 is best design. Number 3 best info. Number 2 too plain.

  • http://twitter.com/helpimahostage (e)JOSH

Thanks Laurence, we had originally intended to let people select two but with only three to choose from that might have gummed up the results a little too much.

  • http://www.davidsanger.com David Sanger

    option 2.

I like the first one but if you track eye movements you go back and forth between the logo and the sun. Better to have just one point of interest to focus on.

  • Scott Allen

It only allows you to vote for one. The burning sun (or whatever it is) doesn’t do anything for me. I like seeing “all in one” in bigger letters, although I think it’s then redundant to have it at the bottom — I’d change it to “Premium” in the bottom.

  • http://twitter.com/_ckramer Christine Kramer

Even though it says to pick two I was only able to vote for one. I like #3 the least — I think the extra text line is a distraction — just my opinion though.

  • Wayne

I have a thing for stars. First one really got me. But I’m torn between that and number 3.

  • Liz Pullen

Yes, the instructions say, “Please pick your two favorite thumbnails” but I could only choose one option.

I think Thumbnail #1 is the prettiest but I think for your purposes (branding and reproduction) it is too busy and crowded. It would be fine in a large size but in smaller form the name doesn’t stand out as much as in Thumbnail #2 and #3.

  • Scott Allen

I agree with David re: 1 vs 2. Simple is better.

  • http://twitter.com/zoe201015 Amanda Fox

I like #3 from the standpoint of the extra info.

  • Mysmartpuppy

The sun is pretty but off topic so I picked three, which says your message right up front. The two second eye scan gets the info with no red herrings (or yellow distractions).

  • http://twitter.com/icanogar Iñaki Cano

I prefer the one with the sun, for it’s not just text but a story. I find it more complete, aesthetically ballanced.

  • Mysmartpuppy

Since I did both – I went and retweeted your call out for votes. Hope that helps your process. Sarah

  • http://twitter.com/tmcrill Tamara McRill

Is the first one new? That’s the only one I like or even notice. If I *had* to pick another, it would be #3, because the orange word in the center at least makes my eye toy with the edge of the thumbnail. But it is cluttered with repeating word.

  • http://twitter.com/Madrileno Madrileño

The first seems more nice than the others, like next generation/future.

  • Christian

Nr 1 gives the same information as the other two but is far more pleasant and triggers a good feeling

  • http://www.photolocity.ca/ Gage Canada

I like the first one, the sun aspect of it is very eye catching.

  • http://twitter.com/jtitamer Jeff Titamer

I have to imagine if I’m looking for a WordPress theme to buy I would want something with extra value if possible therefore I choose #3 because of the “all in one” directs my attention to that fact.

  • http://www.facebook.com/ronromero23 Ron Romero

My eyes were immediately drawn to thumbnail 1 as soon as this page loaded, it is atheistically pleasing. Thumbnail 3 is my least favorite, it is too busy and repeats the “all in one” phrase.

  • http://twitter.com/natsteinmetz Nathalie Steinmetz

I choose #1. Reasons are (a) I would’t put ‘all in one’ into the main logo area, as this is repeated at the bottom text, and, (b), I really like the partial sun in the logo – reminds me of supernova, which is a great play with the name IMO.

  • http://ramikan.wordpress.com/ Rami Kantari

    i just picked 3 … more appealing :)

  • http://www.spain-football.org Simon Harris

I’ve voted for 3 but I also like the Orange sun effect – perhaps you could combine!

  • http://socialpositive.wordpress.com/ Nick

    I pick number 1

  • Crille Vuorenmaa

I like the first one, the sun aspect of it is very eye catching.

  • Afulmer

    # 1 your eyes are attracted to the top first.

  • http://twitter.com/candacemountain Candace Mountain

The orange partial circle at the top really helps draw my eyes to NOVA as the first thing I look at which I think is huge from a branding standpoint.

  • http://twitter.com/gregbepper Greg Bepper

I went for #3 because it was mainly the ‘All in one’ that first grabbed my attention

  • (e)HANZ

i dont recall seeing this design of number 1 before this..i like that ‘Supernova’ thing ..

  • http://twitter.com/INREOBroker Matt Armstrong

I like the information on the 3rd thumbnail.

  • http://twitter.com/gregbepper Greg Bepper

… and of course made me think …’All in One’ what?’

  • http://www.kratomeast.com Kratom East

I picked # 3  I think the ” all in one ” text help to identify what NOVA was and helps make a solid brand

  • http://twitter.com/bradfordfirm Bradford & Bradford

I agree with Candace’s comment above.  The orange circle makes a difference.

  • http://www.facebook.com/CaptRobLee Robert Lee

I like 1 and two, clean designs. In my opinion 3 is too much information for a thumbnail…

  • http://twitter.com/StevenLJohnson Steven L. Johnson

#3 is best because it reinforces the all-in-one brand. the text at bottom of all three of them is hard for me to read and i find #3 stands out best for me in the listings.

  • http://twitter.com/MolinoCharrara Molino Charrara

    Uncluttered and says everything. No.2.

  • http://twitter.com/BobWarren Bob Warren

     Have a Super Wednesday!

  • http://twitter.com/writerlisamason Lisa Mason

I picked the first one. It’s clean but pops and I like the image.

  • http://www.barrywise.com/ Barry Wise

I picked #1, looks like the popular choice :)

  • http://twitter.com/Lucas_Wyrsch Lucas_Wyrsch

    Thanks Josh for sharing!
    I’ve chosen the first version!
    Have a great Wednesday!
    Best,
    Lucas

  • Rex Jarvis

    Simple is best, number 2.

  • http://twitter.com/TMStreetAnalyst Main Street Analyst

No vote possible  for me. But looks like #1 is going to make it. Pretty cool button.

  • http://twitter.com/organichat craig daniels

I picked 3 because the phrase “all in one” is much more emotionally captivating to the mind then the other two…

  • http://twitter.com/Freedomwalker77 Kim Lavigne

The one with the sun is most pleasing to the eye!

  • Anonymous

I prefer the clean look of number 2. I do not like the square font of the text at the bottom of all 3. I think it really clashes with the rest of the thumbnail.

  • http://www.socialmediapearls.com Shirley Williams

I picked #1 as I liked the clean look, The yellow “moon” captured my eye however the overall look was sharp, minimal and clean

  • http://www.orient-lodge.com ahynes1

I like the first one best.  The second is a little too sparse.  The third has too much text.

  • qwikster

I went with number 2 for me its the cleanest of the three and I am more pulled to clean graphics than cluttered or busy ones.

  • Randy Talbot

The “sun” on #1 really make it pop! 1ST Choice!

My 2nd choice was #3 but I didn’t like the repeat of “all in one”. I think it would have been better with just “nova one” in the top section

  • Paula B-H

I like number 3 but I seem to be in the minority!

  • http://twitter.com/b3rnd Bernd

I like Nr. 2. It’s crisp and clean.

  • http://twitter.com/TheyCallMeKate Kate

Three!  One looks like you should be scrolling up, and I like the color in three.

  • http://twitter.com/jruthkelly J. Ruth Kelly

it only allowed for one choice and my top choice was the 1st one. 2nd choice – the 2nd one because it’s not too crowded. the sun could be seen as too much but it’s got a unique pull and invites the viewer to READ. good stuff…

  • http://twitter.com/jvzelst Jeroen van Zelst

The orange catches the eye, and that the most prominent in the first one. To me the 3rd is a good ‘second place’. It’s a pretty clean design, certainly compared to the other thumbs you placed it between in the example. No.2 is too simple, the purpose of a thumb is not to inform you, it’s to make you click it. And that’s what I would do on the 1st one.

  • Anonymous

    I’m with you!

  • Anne Thomas

    I like #3

  • Diana Lewis

I chose #1,  it drew my attention right away. The color at the top is appealing and your name is front and center the way it should be.

  • Todd Robinson (EA< visualpro)

Number one is the best by far…  But I would give some consideration to changing the way the type below is handled….. A different font could help quite a bit.  The blue color of the ” one ” gets lost w the black background… the white type needs to have crisper lines… The logo has a nice treatment but there is no balance with the font that was chosen…   and to that… the thumbnail should be one image… the fact the tagline is completely isolated from the above imagery is distracting… and the clarity of the message is then further lost because the top 3/4′s is dynamic and the bottom looks like an afterthought.

I hope I was not too harsh but I have to call it out….  The top from the first one is good.. it just needs to evolve so that one image is not competing against the other…

  • http://twitter.com/BTRIPP Brendan Tripp

While being attractive in its component parts, the one with the orange circle felt “crowded”, and the one with just the name felt “sparse”, so I went with the one with the name and tag-line, although it might be improved by having the circle (is that the sun? kind of hard to tell in these thumbnails) replace the “O” in NOVA, especially as you’re not using alternating colors in that version.

  • Alex

Visually, #1 is an eye catching one. But my vote went for #3. Says it all.

  • http://www.arow.biz/ Andreas Wiedow

#1 – Less is more and all colors included

  • tincanman2010

    I agree too

  • tincanman2010

    I agree too

  • Joanne Greco

I picked #1….#2 is plain and #3 is to busy.

  • http://twitter.com/fractals john philpin

HA !! second time round I still choose the one that is least popular – still it is the best

    - focus on the name – good
    - best use of ‘emptiness’
    - no extraneous introduction of extras (e.g. the sun in number 1)

for me still too much clutter in the bottom part

suggest – wordpress theme is shorter than theme for wordpress
why repeat all in one in main part and bottom (number 3(

  • http://twitter.com/charlieperkins7 Charlie Perkins

I picked the first one because I like the orange from above.  It adds color to the image.

  • http://disqus.com/stjepanradic/ Stjepan Radic

Graphic theme of all three are made to perfection. Any theme is hard to single out as the best. The first theme is most striking at first glance as the greatest features of the brand.
    I chose the first theme.

  • http://twitter.com/articlemastery Article Mastery

Graphics RULE! It’s no competition between a thumb sans gfx and one with a cool graphic – especially a partial (adds a bit of mystery)

  • http://twitter.com/tpr2 tpr2

    number 1 for me Josh

that extra bit of color draws the eye to the thumbnail.

  • Artrotter99

I like number 3 because the message “ALL IN ONE” it’s bigger and makes and the page looks more equilibrate

  • Tony Patti

    All-In-One always grabs my eye.

  • http://twitter.com/DonCarlitos Charlie McHenry

I go for “clean & crisp.” No. 2 meets that criteria. It’s the “cleanest” of the prototypes provided.

  • http://LiveIntentionally.org Paul Steinbrueck

I voted for the first one.  The sun on #1 is really the only design element on any of the 3.  Plus I don’t see any reason to have “all in one” on the graphic twice as it is in #3.

  • http://diethylstilbestrol.co.uk/ DES Daughter

because at least with #1 we can SEE a bit of the NOVA star…

  • Anonymous

‘All in one’ of #3 grabbed my attention directly as a professional outlook design

  • http://twitter.com/vanachkov Victor

Voted for  Thumbnail 2 because it’s “clean”, but I like  Thumbnail 3 too

  • http://twitter.com/mgilstrap19 Michelle Gilstrap

I think it will be number 1 because of the sun on it. It gives it a little more.

  • http://twitter.com/aames Andrea Ames

#1 really stands out to me… I suspect it’s the “sun” :) VERY nice.

  • Laura Sykes

I also picked #3 (and am pleased to see that Professor Johnson and I agree!) – it is the least ‘busy’ while getting the maximum point across.

(Please forgive – but I really hope and think you don’t mean ‘atheistically’ but perhaps ‘aesthetically’ instead?! – just to show I am paying attention!)

  • http://twitter.com/helpimahostage (e)JOSH

Thanks for the heads-up on our rather atrocious typo :)

  • Anonymous

#3 looks the best alongside other templates in the frame below the question

  • Charlie

No 3, as I tend to read headlines and this one jumped out at me.

  • http://twitter.com/2b1 2b1

3 is real good cool stuff : D

  • robertz

No. 1. Curved objects always attract.

  • http://twitter.com/EmmanuelGonot Emmanuel Gonot

I picked up number 1 for simplicity and the symbolism of the orange disk in the upper portion. I would have preferred number 3 since I like the tagline ‘All in One’ being displayed prominently but it was repeated redundantly at the bottom text making it unnecessarily crowded.

  • http://www.waterwayrealty.com WaterwayRealty

I like option 3, still. clean and balanced.

  • http://twitter.com/KatieDC Kathleen Decosmo

    chose #3

  • http://twitter.com/KatieDC Kathleen Decosmo

    Chose #3

  • http://twitter.com/ITCompanies EcoOnlineAdvertising

#1 The graphic is just AMAZING! I love it!

  • http://twitter.com/valmayuk Valmay Young

#3 As I can read All in 3 without straining my eyes!

  • http://www.MagicTrax.net Magic Trax

I chose #2. I still prefer its overall clean look.

  • Kickass Household

I chose #3 because I was curious what “all-in-one” meant.

  • Mike

#1 – The Sun adds that little something extra without making it too busy.  It adds the lagniappe, as we say in Louisiana.

  • Anonymous

I like the sun hanging in the sky in image #1

  • Allforvols1999

Liked #1 best. Clean, descriptive, and colorful. Gives a better impression of “space” and “growth.”

  • fxbgscott

Picked #1 – thought it was much cleaner than the other two and communicated the intent better

  • Allforvols1999

    #1!

  • R90

I voted for the first thumbnail. Contains better resolution to grab someones attention, it also  points out to something while the others are plain not meaningful.

    R90

  • http://twitter.com/ametsound Ed Nix

I like #1 – for me the “sun” coming down over nova screams to me.  #3 is too jammed with text.  When I look for themes on WP having a tile that grabs my eye usually gets sampled first.

  • Kimmi Buerman

I chose #3. It was the thumbnail that caught my attention first.

  • Steven

1st is best, the sun draws attention and also ties in with theme name. 3rd is next as it draws attention to the “All in one”

  • Kimmi Buerman

    #3

  • R90

first thumbnails is the beasttt!! more colors and better resolution to  grab attention.

    R90

  • Richard Townsend

1 and 3 stand out however you don’t need to say all in one twice in 3

  • Kyle

    3 is the best :)

  • http://twitter.com/NETFreethinker DS

    I agree as well.

  • http://twitter.com/Eleisia Eleisia

I chose #3. More information at a glance. I also like #1 because of nova and the sun.

  • Anonymous

I chose #2.  I liked one because it’s  extra orange color added something that 2 was missing.  I would prefer coloring the “O” orange in  #2.

  • Anonymous

Or #2′s N and V could have been orange.  I’d have to see to decide.

  • http://twitter.com/thisisspain Steve Hall

#1 …BUT I think there is too much text for a thumbnail. It needs to be RECOGNISED but I don’t think it necessarily needs a War and Peace on it. HTH

  • Ron

I picked #1 because the sun at the top would catch someones eye.

  • John Sullivan

    #1  Sun and Not cluttered

  • http://twitter.com/TCraigR Craig Richardson

Voted for #1. I too think it was the ‘sun’ at the top of the thumbnail that drew my attention. Thanks, Craig (e)TCR

  • http://twitter.com/AmangND Amang ND

the first one is my choice, its truly eye catching

  • Wayne Hurlbert

    Picked number 1.

  • Wayne Hurlbert

    I vote for Number 3

  • http://thewebprincess.com/ Dee Teal

I think number three says more about the benefits, it’s easier to get the message because I don’t have to squint to read the text in the footer of the message

  • http://thewebprincess.com/ Dee Teal

I think number three says more about the benefits, it’s easier to get the message because I don’t have to squint to read the text in the footer of the message

  • http://twitter.com/helpimahostage (e)JOSH

    Haha, thanks Steve :)

  • http://twitter.com/helpimahostage (e)JOSH

    Great, thanks Craig!

  • http://twitter.com/helpimahostage (e)JOSH

Thanks Dee, and everyone for the excellent feedback!

  • PeanutCrumbs

The tie in between the orange semi-circle nova and the “All” works great.

  • Gord McLeod

Agreed, it seems like the more balanced icon, too.

  • Erica1MMAfan

I voted for #3 but I’d like it more if the words “all in one” weren’t redundant.

  • http://twitter.com/azmushko Alex Zmushka

Orange planet catches eyes immediately you land on the page.. :) That would be my choice.

  • http://twitter.com/azmushko Alex Zmushka
